ESO Qualification Trainings
Trained to keep the team safe
ESO is short for Electrical System Officer, a very important role in a Formula Student team building an electric car. An ESO keeps an eye on the work the team performs on the car to identify hazards or dangerous practices – to ensure safety at all times.
Some events require ESOs to complete a certified training based on the DGUV 209-093 guideline. That is why we offer ESO qualification trainings every year, at different locations that change from year to year.
The training is free of charge for all participants.
Trainings 2027
Registration opens on 01.11.2026 at 13:00. You will receive the link via our mailing list and on this website.
- Max. 5 participants per team
- Training language: German only
- Free of charge for all participants
- Two days on site in January/February 2027
- Registration deadline: 30.11.2026
From registration to training
Every year, the trainings follow the same three phases.
Registration
Register via the registration form and select every location you could attend – multiple choices are possible. Registration does not guarantee participation.
01.11.–30.11.2026
Review & allocation
We check all registrations against the Level 2E requirements and assign participants to a location. To give as many teams as possible a chance, we may allocate fewer than five places per team.
After registration closes
Training
Two days of theory and hands-on training on site, covering Level 2E and 3E content – followed by self-study practice in your own workshop.

Trainings 2027
The locations change every year. In 2027, three Formula Student teams host the training.
Vienna
26.01.–27.01.2027
Hosted by TU Wien Racing
Kiel
06.02.–07.02.2027
Hosted by Raceyard
Stralsund
08.02.–09.02.2027
Hosted by Baltic Racing Team
Who can participate?
All participants take part in one combined 2E/3E training. If you pass, you receive the Level 2E certificate – which is all you need to register as an ESO at Formula Student events. Please check the requirements carefully before registering.
Work on de-energized parts
- At least 3rd semester of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar background)
- Minimum of 12 hours practical experience working on electrical components in an electric vehicle (e.g. as team member or mechatronics apprentice)
Granted by your team
The training also covers Level 3E content. From 2027, however, the Level 3E qualification itself is granted by each team’s captain, based on conditions the team leadership has to check. We will share the details with all teams at a later date.
For all participants
- VDE membership (first year free, then €16 per year). You can join on site. Membership also gives access to exclusive VDE events and professional networks.
- Max. 5 participants per team
- Good command of German – the training is held in German only
What to expect
Training concept
- Based on the DGUV I 209-093 safety standard, adapted for Formula Student
- Provides legal certainty: in case of an accident, courts expect proper safety training
- Focus: safe work practices on Formula Student electric vehicles
- Teams integrate the theory into their daily operations: certain tasks only with trained personnel present, defined work/rest times on HV components, workshop safety rules for non-electricians
Training structure
Two days on site, combining Level 2E and 3E content. To pass, participants must complete both the theory exam and the practical part. Afterwards, participants complete 16 hours of self-study practice with their team in their own workshop – applying what they have learned in everyday work on the car.
Theory
Practical training
One unit = 45 minutes.
